“Get away from her you B****” you might not know where it’s come from but I bet a majority of you have said the quote once in your lifetime?

Aliens is the second film in the ever growing Xenothrope Universe and with that it did not suffer the sequel curse, in fact many believe (including myself) that it was better than Alien which was a tough act to follow. James Cameron brings a whole different side to Aliens, where Alien was based on a ship with one of the creatures hunting them, Aliens sees the best that the humans have to offer vs a whole colony/nest of Aliens. They’re doomed from the start!

Reprising her role as Ripley, Sigourney Weaver delivers another Phenomenal performance, this time hardened by her experience. When the marines don’t listen to her and end up getting massacred it’s up to Ripley to save the day, and save the day she does! the film also introduces Lance Henriksonn as Bishop, the super calm Android with the knife hand trick, we all know that!! Michael Bhien is the heroic Corporal Hicks, who isn’t turn ends up being Ripley’a love interest…

Considering that this film came out in 1984, it still stands tall with the films of today. It has spawned many other titles from it including video games, spin offs, satires and almost everyone knows the “they mostly come out at night… mostly” quote. The special effects are on point, the Aliens themselves are terrifying and the face huggers still put fear into people to this day! Well they do to me anyway, the film isn’t just one genre, it’s a Sci Fi thriller with action packed horror! Basically a no nonsense masterpiece!!

This film is so influential that the video game Halo based its marines off of it and got in a bit of trouble for copying the dialogue.

If you’re looking for pure cinematic entertainment then look no further!!

Bom bom bom… bommmm bom, bom bom bom… bommmm bom! Has to be one of the most iconic, if not the most, iconic entrance theme tunes of all cinematic and tv history! Everyone knows it and if they don’t then they would’ve been under a rock their whole lives. Star Wars has had such an impact on the cinematic world! I’m sure Mr Lucas had no idea how much it would change the world either. Ever since a new hope came out people began to dream of the stars and picked up sticks to become Jedi.

I write a critic of my favourite of all the Star Wars films and that being Empire Strikes Back released three years after A New Hope. We return to a Galaxy Far Far Away to the aftermath of the Death Star being destroyed, on the ice planet called Hoth. Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie are on a rebel base preparing for evacuation from the Empire! From the get go there’s a feeling that the rebels and our heroes aren’t going to fair well in this film.

Luke is captured by a Wampa and almost died, AT-ATs completely walk all over the base (literally) and Vader is on a juiced up revenge path destroying all in his path. After losing on Hoth Luke ends up on Dagobah being trained by the mysterious little green creature… do or do not, there is no try. Han, Chewie and Leia end up being chased around by the Empire in the ever failing Millennium Falcon. All paths connect again on Cloud City where we meet the dashing Rogue Lando Calrissian, who although a friend of Hans betrays him to Vader. Han is frozen and sent off to Jabba the Hut, Luke turns up and then the biggest cinematic reveal of all time hits us… Luke I am your father!!!!

I remember watching Empire in 1997, I was holding my X Wing and watching in awe. I remember the shock and screaming at the screen when Luke found out. A whole 17 years later and the film is still as powerful and hard hitting. George Lucas has created a masterpiece and a legacy! Feels throughout the world unit for their love of his universe and their hate for Jar Jar… no one likes Jar Jar, but don’t get me started.

The special effects, dialogue, story and music today still compete with the very best. There are not many franchises that can compete with that of Star Wars and there are not that many films that can compete with Empire. For those who are yet to watch this film then welcome to the best of the best!!

Stardust is a timeless British film that has become a classic. With a brilliant cast of whose who of British actors, as well as Michelle Pfieffer, Claire Danes and Robert De Niro, this film brings joy and happiness throughout! If you’re looking for a feel good fantasy film then this is it!

We are transported to an English village in the 1800s where our unlikely hero Tristain, played by Charlie cox, vows to bring back a fallen star for the towns ‘beauty’ Sienner Miller, he must travel passed the guarded wall in by his town to the magical realm of Stormhold. However, the star is no lump of rock, it’s a maiden, Yvaine, Claire Danes. Tristan, the youth, is not the only one looking for her: three witches, led by Lamia, Pfieffer, want her heart to make them young; and, the sons of the dead king of Stormhold want her because she holds a ruby that will give one of them title to the throne. Assisting Tristan are his mother, the victim of a spell, and a cross-dressing pirate of the skies played by none other than Robert De Niro. Will Tristan win his true love?

This film is beautiful, and is made evermore so by the fantastical realm of Stormhold and those that reside in it. You spend the whole film smiling whenever Claire Danes does and laughing at the original tough guy Robert Di Nero as a cross dresser! Charlie Cox plays a brilliant lead role and you end up routing for him the whole way. Mark strong reprises his almost certain role of the bad guy and plays it incredibly well.

I love this film and can watch it again and again and again.

For Narnia

My second Fantasy genre review is that of The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe. Fitting considering my first was Lord of the Rings and both Tolkien and Lewis were good friends in real life.

After LOTR arrived it opened up the pathway for all book to film adaptations and with this came, in my personal opinion, the second greatest fantasy book series ever. C.S.Lewis creates Narnia, a world ever on the brink of destruction, in which good vs evil occurs.

Although the second book of the franchise this was the first cinematic introduction we had to the Narniaverse and it started off strong! We join Pevensie family during the height of the Blitz, chaos ensues all around and it is a dark time for Londoners. As a result the children are sent away from London to the countryside, Where they stay with the strange Professor Kirke. During a rainy day Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy play hide and seek, Lucy ends up hiding in… you guessed it, the Wardrobe. She is transported to the world of Narnia and I shall ruin nothing else.

Big screen debuts from James McAvoy and Tilda Swinton, who are phenomenal, compliment this film greatly. Oh top of that the scenery and special effects really draw you into this magical universe. For those that read the books as children it is everything you imagined, from badgers house to the final battle this film does not disappoint. It is a beautiful homage to C.S.Lewis and his writing.

For those looking for a bit of magic and adventure look no further, this film provides it all!

They’re taking the hobbits to Isengard

When people ask what are your top five favourite films I will always give this in there. Always a controversial one as it’s the middle film of an epic saga, adapted from JRR Tolkien’s marvellous universe by the genius that is Peter Jackson.

I first read the Lord of the Rings book when I was 9 years old. A tough old read at that age too and when I heard that there were films coming out of it I couldn’t wait! Back at that stage The Return of the King was my favourite, I mean it had the biggest battle and the good guys kicked some serious butt.

However, when I first watched The Two Towers I was utterly blown away. Everything about it was perfect the special effects, the acting, the direction, the scenery. I could go on and on about how Ian Mcellan made the perfect Gandalf, how Sean Austin gave a heart warming performance, how Vigo Mortensen was the hero everyone needed and how bad*** Orlando Bloom was as Legolas. That’s just to name a few of the wonderfully selected cast!

The fellowship is broken, the fate of the world hangs by a thread. The ring is with Frodo and Sam, Merry and Pippin have been kidnapped by Uru Kai and Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli give chase… “they’re taking the Hobbits to Isengard”. Jackson encapsulates the wonder of the fantasy realm with a huge help of the New Zealand countryside. Plenty of bird view shots and panning shots allow the watcher to imagine themselves running along with our heroes and defeating Uru Kai.

In the Fellowship we were given a snippet of how Jackson would stage a huge battle and then we were then given a full version in the Two Towers! Nothing of this magnitude was attempted before! The CGI to this day still competes with he best. Although not canon, the Lorien Elves turning up to aid the Men of Rohan was perfect. Everyone wanted to see the elves in battle and it gave a heartwarming gesture to the hope of survival… you also knew that they were all doomed.

All in all this film is still my favourite! I hope I haven’t given too many spoilers away to those watching it for the first time… I envy you!!

A Fitting End

Firstly, I’d like to address the nay sayers who critique this film. It is evident from reading their comments that they have no idea that this film is part of the Cornetto Trilogy and their comments fall short.

Secondly, don’t look too deep into this film, it wasn’t meant for that. The first film of the series was about an average joe surviving the zombie apocalypse, the second film was about a brilliant cop solving crime in a murderous town and now the third is about a group of school friends who, albeit reluctantly, come back to their hometown to finish a pub crawl, however they did not expect it to have been taken over by aliens that basically run our world.

Simon Pegg stars as Gary King, a man unfulfilled and stuck in his past blaze of glory, who orchestrates an unwilling pub crawl with school friends he hasn’t seen in decades. These friends consist of a pedigree of British actors, Nick Frost a straight laced office worker who has a particular hatred towards Gary, Martin Freeman a pretentious estate agent, Paddy Considine a normal run of the mill architect And Eddie Marsan, a mouse of a man working at his fathers dealership.

Gary collects all men under the pretence of his mother dying and gets them back to their old village where they attempt to do a pub crawl that’s finishes at The Worlds End. As they begin their journey through their old town it become apparent that things aren’t quite right, they are almost exactly the same as they were twenty years previous. As the pub crawl continues events start to unravel, Rosamund Pike enters the fray as a love interest between Pegg and Considines characters. Pierce Brosnan appears a cool Headmaster and to finish the trilogy an appearance from Bill Nighy occurs.

I shall not ruin the film anymore not give the plot away further. Out of the three Cornetto Films this is my least favourite, but that does not take anything away from this film as it is still brilliant! I would watch this again and again!

The Hottest Fuzz

The second instalment of the Cornetto trilogy sees Simon Pegg and Nick Frost bleed blue for the greater good with Edgar Wright directing them. The trios offscreen relationship is one to envy, it must be amazing to be able to work with your bestfriends doing something you love, on top of that you then get to walk on set with a phenomenal British cast, Timothy Dalton, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Coleman, Bill Nighy and many many more.

The film begins at Hendon, the training ground and home of The Met Police. Unfortunately the training ground is no more so it is nostalgic watching this. Simon Peggs portrayal of Officer Angel is spot on, he is the no nonsense, straight laced, bad ass, a tad weary, super cop. Opposing that is Nick Frost’s bumbling Constable Butterman who seems to owe cake fines every week for multitudes of mishaps the latest being drunk driving… classic fine for breaking the law.

I laughed the whole way throughout this film, every time I watch it I find myself laughing and appreciating something I missed the time before. It is turning into a classic in my eyes, a fond favourite that is still used today in many clips would be the ‘What’s up Danny, never taken a shortcut before?’ If you know then you know. It’s comedic value is second to none and it can sit high on the shelves of being a action film too. Simon Pegg makes a understated brilliant action hero, the final action sequence where Pegg and Frost take on the the townsfolk has you sitting on the edge of your seat whilst simultaneously rolling around with laughter.

If you want to watch a film that’ll keep you interested throughout the watch Hot Fuzz! If you want to watch a film that’ll have you crying with laughter then watch Hot Fuzz! If you want a trip down memory lane then watch Hot Fuzz! All in all if you just want to enjoy a film for what it is then watch Hot Fuzz!

Let’s get ready to rumble…

Let’s start off with addressing all the negative reviews… what did you expect from a film about a mutated giant ape? Did you expect it to start spouting Shakespeare as it danced through the jungle? Get a grip of yourselves, this film provides exactly what it was meant to! An introduction to Monarch, an introduction to to the Titans and and introduction to the inevitable Kong vs Godzilla! On top of that we get the luxury of seeing top class actors, brilliant cinematography and class special effects.

The film starts by throwing us into action, two WW2 planes come crashing down onto a picturesque island, the pilots jump out and immediately start to try and kill the other, their battle through the jungle sees them a top a cliff just about to kill one another when Kong’s appearance prevents any death. Brilliant! This is exactly what we want, within the first few minutes we’ve been introduced to the big guy.

Fast forward 30 odd years and we meet John Goodman playing a Monarch representative attempting to coerce the US government to assist him with discovering Skull Island. John Goodman, great actor and huge screen presence. I’m already thinking brilliant. We then meet Samuel Jackson as a stern no nonsense Colonel Packard, I’ve always been a huge fan of Mr Jackson so I’m already happy with this, then we meet Tom Hiddleston who is another brilliant actor playing a retired SAS Captain our for hire. Other noted actors in this production are Toby Kebbel, Brie Larsonetc.

The director wastes no time in getting to Skull Island and throwing us into the action. A typical American method of blowing things up and asking questions later is what sees Kong come back into our screens. Monarch decide to drop bombs on the island to establish whether it is a hollow earth or not, this in turn sees Kong appear again exact his form of retribution, I mean it is his home after all. From then on out it because a story of survival and getting off the island, the introduction of John C Reilly later on in the film brings the comedic side as as well as a little historical knowledge to Kong and what he’s all about… and that is a protector of the world we know against the creatures that lurk in the ground below.

Huge battle scenes between Kong and the humans, the humans and deadly Skull Island Creatures And Kong And Skull Island Creatures gives the viewers exactly what they wanted. Throughout the whole of this film you’re thinking that we’re just building up to the inevitable Kong vs Godzilla! Let’s not forget that John C Reilly started Kong has not stopped growing yet, he’s going to be a lot bigger!

I personally and loving the direction that the monster verse is going at the moment and can’t wait to see me. I enjoyed this film and think others will too. For those on the fence just go into it thinking, hey this is a film about a giant mutated ape smashing stuff up.

Where would you rather die? Here or in a Jaeger?

First off let me say I’d die in a Jaeger every day of the week! Secondly, this film is exactly what I wanted it to be. So for those who didn’t like it, fair enough it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but what did you expect from a film purely based on massive monsters being taken down by massive robots.

I’ve been a fan of Del Toro since Pans Labryinth, his way of filming and imagination brings a new lease of life to the cinematic world. You can always tell your watching a Del Toro film and that is part of his masterpiece. When I first saw the trailer to this film I was ecstatic, what massive geek doesn’t want to see this? And then you see that they’ve employed Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Charlie Hunman and many more, it’s already starting to become a cult classic before it’s even screened, and you start to let your imagination run away with you… if we’ve got Kaijus then we must have Godzilla! Man I couldn’t handle the build up to this film!

Then I saw it… and man was I impressed! I’ve read a lot saying that the story line was poor and the CGI was too much. What do people honestly want? We’re not looking at Shakespearean masterpiece. We’re looking at cinema for what it is, a form of escapism, a place you can go and for an hour plus and imagine yourself in another world, and Del Toro allows that.

From the opening scene we are thrown into the action, a voice over from Hunman explains the Kaijus on their destructive path and then explains what we did to combat them… the Jaeger programme. We’re shown snippets of Jaegers vs Kaijus and it looks epic. We’re told of humanities inevitable downfall of our own making and then we meet Hunman’s character Reilly, an over eager show off who fails to listen to his orders. This is shown when he ignores the orders of the indomitable Marshal Pentecost (Elba) and loses his brother to a Kaiju and has to pilot a Jaeger on his own, which is almost impossible. Fast forward five years and the Jaeger programme is all but finished the Kaijus aren’t stopping and there’s only a few to save us…

If you love big action films with monsters, robots, heroes, aliens, love, jealousy and a little bit of Charlie Day then this is the film for you. It’s a thrill ride of seat gripping adventure that won’t disappoint.

A cinematic horror masterpiece

This will be my second horror review, realistically it should’ve been my first as this is the greatest horror film ever created, so much so that it was banned in certain countries and condemned by the church… we’re talking business here!

I first watched the Exorcist in 2007, I was a little late to the party and my god do I regret it! I had unfortunately made the mistake of watching Scary Movie 2 before this and it was slightly ruined by the satirisation of the head turning scene, however, this made me appreciate the fear factor of the film even more. It made me think that when this film first came out people must’ve died of shock and going home into a dark house would’ve been terrifying for a long long time, I suppose in some ways it still is.

Max Von Sydow (the man who never ages) is one of the hero’s in this tale, playing a veteran exorcist who is a young sweet girls last hope against the evils that lurk in the darkness. He brings a acting pedigree and sense of class to the role, it brings this horror genre into new fields. It is not cheap or poorly written, you feel everything the characters do and are willing the priests to expel the demon!

A true historical masterpiece of cinematic history! If you’re in the mood to be sacred then watch the original scary film!! You will not be disappointed!!
